We have belaboured this worm issue for several weeks. We analysed all the aspects of intestinal worm burden, prevention and cure. We felt that this theme is so important that it should be covered with some meaningful degree of detail, while making the discussion patently readable. Worms debilitate our pets more than perhaps all the other usual maladies combined. Today, we’ll try to extract the prominent points of our previous discussions and deliver them in telegram form.

(1) Types of worms

Usually, here in Guyana, the intestinal worms that infest our companion animals are roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. Please remember that ‘screwworms’ are not really worms, and heartworms which do not live in the gut, will be dealt with later – next week, in

(2) Signs of a worm infestation

Roundworms:

– Pot-bellied appearance

– Dull Coat

– Vomiting

– Soft Stool

– Anaemic appearance

– Emaciation

– Lethargy

– Worms (often the immature stages) may be

expelled with the stool or seen in mouth.

Hookworms:

– Anaemic appearance

– Diarrhoea, often with blood; dark coloured stool

– Emaciated and lethargic

– Very thin,
