Albion Sports Club paced by a brilliant 93 from Harrinarine Chattergoon easily defeated Diamond Sports Club by 46 runs to win the Republic Bank under-15 limited overs competition at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground Bourda yesterday.
Diamond seemed set to take the title when they had the powerful Albion side 38-4, but a fifth wicket partnership of 76 by Chattergoon and Rajendra Dasrath who added 18 stabilised the innings.
Chattergoon struck eight luscious boundaries and a six that sailed into the Rohan Kanhai stand. He faced 130 balls after opening the innings and was the seventh wicket to fall in the 37th over.
Off spinner Jagdesh Bishun was the best bowler for Diamond picking up 5-37 from 10 overs. Asif Ishak grabbed 3-31 while medium pacer Jason Henry claimed 2-24.
Diamond got a decent start when their openers Khemraj Singh and Shameer Fazal put on 40 for the first wicket. The innings did not continue in the same vein however, apart from Singh who scored 23, the steady spin of the Albion bowlers controlled their batsmen.
Diminutive 11-year-old left-arm spinner Gudakesh Moti baffled the East Bank side grabbing 3-21 from 10 overs while Verapen Pewrmaul picked up 3-30 and Ramesh Naidu grabbed 2-17 as Diamond folded for 153 all out in 46.3 overs.
West Indies off-spinning legend Lance Gibbs addressing the teams during the presentation, urged the youngsters to strive for further success, reminding them that he started playing cricket when he was close to their age, but aspired for greater things and achieved his goal of playing for the West Indies.
GCB president Chetram Singh thanked Republic Bank for their sponsorship of youth cricket emphasizing the importance of sponsorship to the development of cricket.
Angela Sears, president of the Republic Bank Sports Club congratulated both teams on their success of getting to the final and wished them well in their further endeavours.
