Bakewell Topp XX and Victoria Kings have secured the two remaining semi-final places in the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament following victories over Alpha United and Western Tigers respectively.
In the matches played on Sunday at the GFC ground, Bakewell Topp XX defeated Alpha United 4-3 while Victoria Kings edged Western Tigers 2-1.
Marlon Benjamine opened the Topp XX account in the 27th minute. The score was however negated by national striker Anthony `Awo’ Abrams in the 44th minute to end the first half 1-1. Upon resumption, Topp XX dominated the play at midfield through national midfielder Kayode McKinnon, who assumed the playmaker role, stamping his authority with constructive and effective passes.
In one such instance from a useful buildup, Collie Hercules put Top Xx ahead in the 48th minute.
Fourteen minutes later, Quincy Madramootoo provided Alpha’s equalizer, but Abrams, with a superb exhibition of dribbling skills, gave the city side their first lead with a well executed left foot shot in the 77th minute.
Topp XX, not to be outdone, upped the tempo and was rewarded with two goals in an equal number of minutes off the boot of Kevin Beaton in the 84th and 86th minutes.
Earlier in the evening, Edmonson Gomes accounted for Tigers’ lone goal (42nd) while Leon Rawlins tucked in the equalizer for Victoria Kings and Jason Adonis scored the winner 13 minutes from regulation time.
The competition will continue tomorrow at the same venue with a double header to decide the finalists.
