Relatives of six Republic Bank employees, allegedly implicated in an $8 million ABM theft converged at the bank’s Water Street location yesterday in an effort to get answers about their detainment.
The relatives are angry at the prolonged detainment of the employees, saying there was no link to them and the disappearance of the money.
One woman said her daughter has a young baby and she has been kept away from the child for the entire Sunday and up late yesterday afternoon. The sister of one of the girls said her sister was called to the bank for an “urgent meeting” and she has not seen the young woman since.
Relatives told reporters they visited the bank yesterday in an effort to solicit some information on why workers continued to be detained. However, they were unable to get any information. The bank officials were also not speaking to the media when contacted on the issue.
Stabroek News was told that an incident occurred at the said banking institution three months ago, when someone attempted to raid one of the Automated Banking Machines.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the money disappeared from the ABM at Guyoil gas station on Kitty Public Road, at which there was no break-in, and was discovered by a staff member. Management was contacted and the six employees, who reportedly have the access code to the ABM, were called in. They have been in custody since then, this newspaper was told.
