Former Principal Magistrate Oscar Parvatan died yesterday at his brother’s Kingston, Georgetown residence after a prolonged illness. He was 75. Parvatan fathered eight children, all of whom reside overseas.
His brother, Vibert Parvatan, a senior official at Fogarty’s told Stabroek News that the former magistrate for the Leonora Court took ill last year with a heart condition. Vibert Parvatan said his brother came off the bench last year February and sought medical attention overseas. He later returned to Guyana and was recuperating, but had not the physical energy to resume work.
During this period, the magistrate’s brother said that he was also receiving medical attention locally and was staying at his place in Kingston.
Vibert Parvatan said that his brother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, the same illness which caused his death. He was married to Loraine Parvatan who also resides overseas. Oscar Parvatan would be remembered, his brother said, as a firm magistrate with a lively sense of humour, which helped to relieve the tension of a courtroom. He had studied in the UK where he acquired his legal skills before returning to Guyana to hold several legal positions.
