Dear Editor,
I have been searching for words to react to Mr Jagdeo’s flippant response, reported in your papers, to the views expressed by a former First Lady and former President, on the question of the withdrawal of Government advertisements from Stabroek News.
First of all, his ascription to this prominent figure in Guyana’s history as ‘private citizen’ and his contention that she is “entitled to her opinion”, bespeak the President’s substantive insensitivity, at least, to protocol. At another level, it conveys a palpable disrespect for an iconic figure amongst the pantheon of the People’s Progressive Party’s stalwarts. Women of Guyana of all persuasions should protest this treatment of a ‘public citizen’.
This type of arrogance is increasingly becoming a trend, a fact which those who cower should note carefully for when comes their turn.
What an unfortunate model is being set for the future behaviour of political aspirants, and those who are prone to mimicry!
Yours faithfully,
Marcia Diaz
