Dear Editor,
Change does not came easily to us human beings and what I wish to say is likely to incur the wrath of some political supporters including friends of mine.
Now in Trinidad and I believe Brazil their Carnival precedes the Lenten season where Christians all over observe both fasting and special prayers in addition to other religious activities. I wonder if at some future date we could not consider retaining the Republic date for flag raising but hold the Mashramani Float parade prior to the commencement of Lent.
Yours faithfully,

Editor’s note
Carnival is fixed with reference to Lent which starts on Ash Wednesday . Lent lasts for six and a half weeks before Easter, excluding Sundays. Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 20, the nominal date of the Spring Equinox.
Mashramani is held on Republic Day, February 23. Some years it may occur before the start of Lent and other years, like 2007, after.
