The battle for supremacy in the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tournament will rage this evening at the GFC ground when defending champions Fruta Conquerors take on city counterparts Pele for the grand $500,000 first prize money along with the Mayor’s trophy.
This evening also Bakewell Topp XX will tackle Victoria Kings in the third place play off.
In the feature game from 8 pm, football fans can expect keen and exciting rivalry from the two teams.
Pele whose powerful line up has scored 12 of the competition’s 37 goals without conceding any will be relying heavily on strikers Nigel `Powers’ Codrington and Gregory `Jackie Chan’ Richardson with nine goals between them to lead the attack.
Supportive at midfield are Sean `Fatso’ Bishop and Konata Mannings, both of whom have also scored goals in the competition, completing Pele’s quartet of national players.
They are expected to be supported by central defenders Dirk Archer and Solomon Austin, along with custodian Shemroy Arthur.
With such a line up, Pele are favourites to capture their first trophy for the 2007 season.
However, opponents Fruta Conquerors will also be sharing similar thoughts, since their line up consists of youth and experience.
Spearheading their challenge are Delon Williams and former national under-17 player Vernon Mills.
The duo will be supported by mid-fielders Elroy Parks, who will assume the play maker role in tandem with Seon Hescott.
Marshalling the defence are central defenders Neville Stanton and Lester Peters , while Leon bailey will do duties between the uprights.
Collie Hercules, Kayoed McKinnon, Shevane Seaforth and Kevin Beaton form the core of Topp XX’s attack, while responding for Victoria Kings are Pierre and Tichard Joseph, Andrew Holder and Victor Williams.
The runners-up of the competition will receive $200,000 and a trophy, while the third and fourth place team will collect $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
