Guyana’s junior track stars will storm the Enmore Community Centre ground today from 10 am when East Coast hosts the third installment of the Developmental Track and Field meeting.
The event will bring the curtain down on the series of developmental meets that started in Linden at the McKenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground and moved to the Police Sports Club ground in Georgetown over two weeks ago.
The country’s junior athletes got an excellent opportunity to close mark their opponents ahead of the Athletic Association of Guyana’s (AAG) National Youth and Junior Championships scheduled for March 8-9.
The contest between Enmore sprinter Kenneth Semple and Progressive Youth Club’s Goddis Accra is heating ahead of the national junior meet. The two sprinters will be at loggerheads again today at Enmore.
Accra narrowly edged Semple on time at the second developmental meet at Eve Leary in the under-20 boys 60 meter dash. They are expected to compete in the same event today with the possibility of appearing in the same heat. Semple has the edge over him being at home and should take full advantage of a course he trains on daily. He is expected to understand the strong head wind at Enmore and the dents on the track but all that depends on the lane assigned to him.
Accra defeated Semple on his home ground two weeks ago. Hopefully Semple can pull off a surprise win that will give his home fans something to cheer about.
Athletes will vie for supremacy over 60 m, 150 m, 600 m and many other events. Alika Morgan will be on show against her rival from New Amsterdam Track Club (NATC), Ashanti Scott.
Phillip Drayton will be looking to feed off his recent success against former club mate, Afeez Samad in the under-20 boys 600 m race. However, Samad, usually a force to reckon with in the under-20 boys 400 m, looks less than his best.
Maybe, it is his move up to the middle distance category from the sprint category or maybe it’s too early in the season to judge the quality athlete’s performance. He will have his chance when it counts on March 8.
Many of the country’s top juniors including Rhondell Alleyne and Rondel ‘Cobra’ Adams will be in competition at the Enmore ground today, honing their skills for the ‘big kill’ in the coming weeks.
