If you believe that Group Three action in tomorrow’s opening of the National Motor Racing Championship Series is only about `Sir’ Mark Vieira and Andrew King, you’ll be well advised to think again.
Andrew Morgan, a seasoned graduate of Group Two, is in the hunt and can create trouble for both King and Vieira who have been the top wheel turners in the group for some time.
Speaking with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Morgan said that he had pushed aside taking part in Mashramani activities to make sure that his Mazda RX7 is in perfect shape for today’s meeting at the South Dakota circuit.
“Once we get the gear ratio and fuel injection working then Mark (Vieira) wouldn’t have to worry about Andrew King, he will be worrying about us,” the speedster said. Morgan made a permanent move up to Group Three approximately two years ago and was unfortunate to crash in the first race during the last November’s International meeting.
However, at the meeting that preceded that Morgan secured two first places and one third. His performance then set off alarms and signalled that Group Three had a legitimate challenge to Vieira and King.
Recently King acquired a Third Generation Mazda RX7 which has upped his chances of doing well today.
Before, King plied his trade, for over a decade, in a Mazda RX3. Vieira, the South Dakota lap record holder competes in a Second Generation Mazda RX7. “We have been doing 36 seconds and up but once we get things working properly we will be going well below that,” Morgan added.
“The prospects look very good and once the mechanics get things sorted we will be very competitive,” the diminutive driver added. His Mazda is being worked on by Justin Jardine. “We have been to the track on Wednesday and Thursday and we plan going today (yesterday) and if we get it right it will be trouble for someone tomorrow (today).”
Today’s meeting, organized by the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club, is scheduled to have 16 races.
