Dexter Solomon scored a brilliant 95 not out to pace Ascension Secondary School to a 117-run victory over St Josephs High School in the Georgetown Secondary Schools final at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground yesterday.
St Josephs, who lost in both the quarter-final and semi-final to Cummings Lodge Secondary and St John’s High School respectively, but advanced because both schools were found guilty of age-limit infringements, were completely outplayed in the lopsided final.
Solomon took the man-of-the-match-trophy after two excellent stumping dismissals and his mature innings of 95 from 96 balls which included five sweetly struck boundaries.
Solomon and Travis Walton who scored 40 with four boundaries put on an 82-run second wicket partnership which ensured Ascension a decent total.
St Josephs, who won the toss and invited Ascension to take first strike, performed poorly in the field. Too many catches were dropped, several run-out opportunities missed, and balls reached the boundary after going straight to fielders.
The situation did not improve when they batted and they were skittled out for 91 in 22.4 overs.
Walton made it a solid all-round performance, returning with the ball to grab 3-20 while medium pacer Devon Smith ended with identical figures bowling for the victors.
Ramesh Sunich of The Trophy Stall donated and presented both the man-of-the-match trophy and the winner’s trophy. He will be providing the same for the Georgetown Girls’ Secondary Schools final scheduled for the GCC ground tomorrow.
The competition, run under the auspices of the Ministry of Education/ Guyana Cricket Board/ National Sports Commission, is near the county zone semi-final stage. Ascension joins East Bank winners Houston in the Demerara zone semi-finals. The West Demerara winner will be decided in their final today at the Versailles ground while the East Coast winner will be decided at a later date.
