UNESCO Secretary-General Dawn Braithwaite said it was time that raising funds for something as important as education and training for persons with disabilities stop depending on the hosting of special events.
Braithwaite made these comments during her feature address at the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme’s annual dinner and entertainment evening, the February Fantasy V, a press release from Communication Concept said. Braithwaite urged the local business sector to form strategic partnerships with the CBR programme to help it to continue to serve persons with disabilities. She said the CBR’s “excellent track record in the areas of providing assistance [for] persons with disabilities qualifies it for more financial and other forms of assistance from the local private sector.”
The release said Braithwaite’s call echoed one made by then British High Commissioner to Guyana, Stephen Hiscock, who had urged the local business community to review the way it provides job opportunities so that persons with disabilities could be accommodated and be given a chance to be self-sufficient.
At the time, in immediate response to the appeal, Kaieteur News publisher Glenn Lall donated $250,000 to the organisation’s training programme and two years before that the Voluntary Services Overseas had entered into a strategic partnership with the CBR.
