Colin France and Trenace Lowe copped two titles each when play in the doubles competitions of the National Sports Commission/Guyana Table tennis Association (GTTA) got underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Wednesday.
France teamed up with Lowe in the mixed doubles event to sink Natalie Cummings and Dwain Dick 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 7-11 and 11-4 in the final with Lisa Lewis and Michael Waithe settling for third place.
France also teamed up with Dick to win the men’s doubles title while Lowe team up with Lisa Lewis to capture the women’s doubles crown.
After they were tied one game apiece in the five-games mixed doubles final, France and Lowe took a commanding 10-4 lead in the next game with Lowe bouncing off smooth returns from Cummings’ shots which allowed France/Lowe to snatch a 2 -1 games lead.
Cummings and Dick dominated the last half of the fourth game to set-up a final game decider.
But it was all plain sailing for France/Lowe as things did not go as planned for the underdogs Cummings and Dick.
France then teamed up with newly crowned men’s singles champion Dick to contest the men’s doubles category with the pair facing the Mildred Mansfield pair of Adrian Willman and Waithe in the final.
The experienced France and Dick easily disposed of Willman and Waithe 11-9, 11-7, 11 – 8. France and Dick also thrashed Nigel Bryan and Ronaldo Bharrat in straight game s in their semi-final match.
Waithe and Willman had a difficult time getting to the final. They eventually toppled Paul Meusa and Hewley Griffith 4-11, 11-9, 12-10 and 11-9 in the semi – final.
Lowe then teamed up with Lewis to capture the women’s doubles event with an 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6 win over juniors Tiffany Blair and Ambrose Thomas.
The doubles championship brought the curtain down on the 2007 installment of the NSC annual Mashramani tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The presentation ceremony is set for 4 pm tomorrow at the host venue.
