Another gold miner is dead and one other injured after the truck they were travelling in, from a mining site called ‘Frenchman’ lost control and crashed into a curb.
Dead is 26-year-old Casey Francois, who, in the company of six other men, was on his way out of ‘Frenchman’ when the accident occurred.
The truck reportedly turned turtle several time before pinning Francois and another man. However, valiant efforts resulted in the other man being pulled free with just a few bruises and scratches. Francois, however, because of his position was pinned under the truck between several barrels.
The other injured man, Dexter Lewis of Silvertown, suffered a fractured left ankle. Lewis was rushed to Mabura Medical Outpost then to the Linden Hospital Complex where he arrived shortly after 3 am yesterday morning. He was treated and sent home.
Lewis told this newspaper that when he left the site of the accident his colleague was still pinned under the truck and that he had died.
He said that they were only a short distance out of ‘Frenchman’ when the accident occurred.
Police from the E&F division were dispatched to the area early yesterday morning to conduct further investigations.
Just last Sunday, another miner, Desmond Hooper of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice was killed when a tyre on the pick-up he was in blew out and the vehicle turned turtle on the way to ‘Frenchman’. Four other men who were in the vehicle were injured.
