Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony is expected to declare open the 6th Annual Linwest Games slated for the Mackenzie Sports Club ground on March 18, beginning at 10am.
According to a release from the New York Sports Association, Dr Anthony has accepted a request to declare the games open.
The New York Sports Association spearheaded by Richard Thompson app-roached the Upper Demerara Sports committee five years ago, stating their intention to stage a track and field meet involving junior athletes.
In 2003, the meet was staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground and showcased athletes from Upper Demerara and their West Demerara counterparts.
Since then, the Games have grown and now involve athletes from four districts, namely Upper Demerara, West Demerara, East Bank and East Coast.
Upper Demerara won the inaugural meet and since then has not relinquished the title.
The first meet was held in July, but the organizers are of the view that March would be a better month to stage the competition, since schools will be out, thus paving the way for more entries.
According to the release, the meet has received the blessings of the Athletic Association of Guyana.
