Regional Executive Officer of Region Ten Henry Rodney has invited tenders for work to be done on a number of teachers’ buildings in the Berbice River.
This follows a letter to this newspaper by Region Ten’s Chairman Mortimer Mingo pointing to a number of shortcomings in the education sector of the region, especially in relation to schools. Mingo had spoken about, among other things, the fact that schools in the Berbice River had to be closed because there were no teachers, teachers’ quarters being renovated and no teachers living in them and violence in schools not being properly addressed by the administration.
Rodney’s announcement also followed on the heels of him telling Stabroek News last week that he was in the process of having the teachers’ quarters in the Berbice River area renovated and that teachers are being sent appointment letters and if they failed to pick them up disciplinary action would be taken.
Rodney made these comments after this newspaper contacted him following the publication of Mingo’s letter which had also indicated that protest actions would be taken as a result of the shortcomings. Mingo when contacted by this newspaper on Wednesday said he had nothing further to say on the issue.
According to the invitation to tender, which was advertised in the Guyana Chronicle last Sunday, there is need for contractors to enclose the teachers’ quarters’ bottom flats at Gateroy, Maria Henriette and St Lust all along the Berbice River. Renovation is needed at the Old St Thomas Primary School, remedial work at the De Veldt Primary School and the Sand Hill Health Centre building all of which are also along the Berbice River. Further work has to be done on the St Aidan’s Primary School, Wismar and two houses in Blue Berry Hill, Wismar.
There is need for revetment on the Katabulli Bridge at Christianburg, Wismar, rehabilitation of Poker Street, Blue Berry Hill Road and, Post Office Road/Silver Town Hill Foot all located at Wismar, Linden. Then persons can tender for the rehabilitation of Wall/America Street Road, and Cinderella City Road in Amelia’s Ward and the Ituni/Kwakwani Access Road.
