A school which houses a multi-purpose centre was recently commissioned at Whitewater to allow children from hinterland communities greater access to education, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a press release.
GINA said the $8M Whitewater School, which was funded by the Social Impact Amelioration Programme, is a primary school which houses the centre and a nursery school.
It is the most recent school commissioned in Region One which boasts schools at Port Kaituma, Canal Bank and Arakaka. Village Captain Norman Cox said the school will bring tremendous benefits to the community’s children and the surrounding villages Sekomaka, Blackwater, Arakuru and Bamboo Landing as prior to its construction students would travel as much as six miles to Wauna to attend the primary school in that village.
Residents said they are grateful for the facility and, Regional Chairman Fermin Singh, who along with other officials recently visited the community, urged the residents to be vigilant and to assist in caring for the school.
