The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will be hosting a series of activities to honour the memory of party founder and President Cheddi Jagan on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his death.
A press release from the party said it will host, along with the Progressive Youth Organisation and the Women’s Progressive Organisation, a number of activities throughout the month which would include observances for Jagan’s birth anniversary on March 22. The PPP/C said one decade after his passing, Jagan’s ideas continue to influence developments nationally and globally and as such the observances will be held under the theme “Cheddi Jagan’s Vision our Living Guide.” Activities will also be hosted by Guyana’s diplomatic missions in London, Suriname, in the United States of America and Canada.
The PPP/C said on March 6 the nation was reminded of Jagan’s six decades of service to Guyana and the world and the activities planned aim to highlight his vision of eradicating poverty, conflict and human suffering and the creation of a new global human order characterized by peace, unity, democracy and a comfortable life for all. The main national events, which started with the annual safari from Georgetown through Karasabai to Orinduik on Monday and a ‘Night of Reflection’ at Freedom House on Tuesday, also include a 10th anniversary tribute at Babu John, Corentyne tomorrow at 3pm; the Cheddi Jagan Annual Cycle Race in Region Six, starting at New Amsterdam, on March 18 at 7 am; the Cheddi Jagan Annual Lecture, given by Grenada Senator Chester Humphrey, at Red House, on March 22 at 3pm; the Fitness Walk at the National Park on March 25 at 7 am and the family fun day at State House, Georgetown, on the same day, at 2pm.
Several regions will host activities such as a day of sport where persons can participate in domino, cricket, softball and football matches. A flag raising ceremony, wreath laying and the laying of a plaque are also planned along with a cultural evening, public meetings and lectures; lectures hosted in schools and photo exhibitions and DVD shows. Some activities that will begin this month will also extend to link with observances to mark the 60th anniversary of Jagan’s entry into Parliament in November 1947. These activities will include a national inter-school quiz, a national essay competition and a national poetry competition planned for three age ranges and a national sport competition.
