Dear Editor,
It has been known for some time now, thanks to the services of Mr. Haslyn Parris and I think of the EAB that there was an error in the computing of electoral results and that the JFAP has been deprived of a seat. There is no sign that the Elections Commission has disputed the calculations pointing to the error in the allocation of seats. Since it appears that no agency is now empowered to correct the error, the main purpose should be to make sure that the deserving party is awarded its seat. Mr Sharma should not have to depend on anyone’s goodwill.
To me it would be proper and responsible for the government side to bring forward a bill to amend the Validation of Elections Act or whatever is the Elections Petition Act to make it possible for an elections petition to be filed in respect to the 2006 elections at a time not later than x months or y days after the statutory time laid down in the Act.
As it appears there should be no opposition to such a bill and there should be no contest to the petition. The rest should follow. At any rate an unintended wrong should be righted by this, or some better means.
Yours faithfully,
Eusi Kwayana
