Chattergoon to lead U15s
Berbice under-15 skipper Harrinarine Chattergoon was yesterday named captain of the Guyana under-15 team which is scheduled to compete in the regional competition in Trinidad and Tobago from April 3-10.
According to manager of the team, Ian John, the squad will be encamped from March 16-29 during which time Coach Vibert Johnson will endeavour to get the players in the best possible shape for the upcoming competition.
The squad consists of five specialist batsmen, three all-rounders, three specialist spinners and three fast bowlers.
The squad, released yesterday is as follows: Harrinarine Chattergoon (captain) Carlos La Rose (vice-captain) Shameer Fazal, Imran Latif, Travis Karim, Delon Fernandes, Joemall LaFleur, Kevin Singh, wicket-keeper, Trinson Carmichael, Amir Khan, Gudakesh Moti, Neal Ramalho, Seon Daniels and Keon Joseph.
The standby players are Rove Harris, Jagdesh Bishun, Melvin Shewprasad, Dayanand Roopnarine and wicket-keeper Marvin Basdeo. (RP)
Low scores dominate
second U-15 trial match
The second national under-15 trial match played at the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday was dominated by low scores from both teams.
Carlos La Rose’s XI batted first and was dismissed for 131 with La Rose hitting the top-score of 20 which included two fours. Amir Khan was the most successful bowler picking up 3-15 while Trinson Carmichael grabbed 3-24 and Harrinarine Chattergoon 2-6 bowling for Chattergoon’s XI who, in reply, fell for 120.
Travis Karim’s 28 which included two fours and a six was the highest score of the match while Melvin Shewprasad chipped in with 21 and Imran Latif, 20.
Off-spinner Jagdesh Bishun wrapped up the tail picking up three wickets without conceding a run from 1.3 overs while Kerron Mc Lennon grabbed 2-13. Pacer Keon Joseph took 2-19 and Rove Harris, 2-21 bowling for La Rose XI’s.(RP)

football tourney
The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) and the University of Guyana (UG) will be involved in a `Inter Higher Institution’ triangular football tournament from today at the UG campus from 4pm.
The first match today will involve UG and the Guyana School of Education, a release from organizer Claude Blackmore stated. According to the release, UG’s main strength will come from Ewart Smith, captain, Delon Douglas, Esan Pearson, Luke Andries, Kellon Lewis, Marlon Whitney, Nkomo Vaughan, Andre Halley and Vice-captain Anthony Gray. Captain of the UG team, Smith told Stabroek sport that the objective of the tournament was to raise awareness among tertiary institutions about sports. The competition continues on Thursday when Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) will go up against GSA at the GSA ground and next Monday when CPCE will play UG at the Turkeyen ground.
The final is scheduled for March 26.
Meanwhile, the University’s Inter Faculty Track and field Championship scheduled for Friday at Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground has been postponed to April 13th.(SH)
Final Futsal preliminary
rounds tomorrow
The final eight preliminary round matches in the Chico Sweets/Smalta Cup national inter-secondary schools Futsal football tournament will be played tomorrow at the National Gymnasium beginning at 6pm.
According to a release, the knock-out round of the competition begins on Thursday at the same venue and with 24 schools advancing to this stage, much excitement is anticipated.
In results from the previous round of matches, St. Joseph’s High beat Golden Grove 3-1, Covent Garden defeated Brickdam Secondary 4-2, Charlestown Secondary edged St. Winifred’s 2-1, Tutorial High and St. Stanislaus College played to a 1-1 draw, St. John’s College defeated Freeburg 3-1, Guyana Education Trust College beat Zeeburg 2-1, Queenstown CHS got the better of Central High 2-1 and David Rose CHS beat Dolphin Secondary 3-1.
