The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has disowned the AK 47 rifle unearthed during a search of a house at 190 Church Street on Wednesday.
The army in a statement said since the weapon was found, checks were done by it and it has been established that the rifle is not one which was reported stolen just over a year ago.
A Kaieteur News article yesterday said that the weapon was confirmed as one of those that disappeared from the army headquarters, Camp Ayanganna in February last year.
Joint services ranks on Wednesday afternoon found the rifle and arrested five persons, including Brazilians, during a cordon and search exercise at the Church Street residence.
A Joint Services press release said that based on information received the ranks mounted an operation at approximately 2 pm at a two-storey building located at 190 B Church Street, North Cummingsburg. It said the weapon was found in the upper flat of the building.
