Dear Editor,
The Santa Rosa Women’s Group, headed by Jean Rodrigues (Aunty Jean) and comprising women of the Santa Rosa and Waramuri communities, are currently producing hats, bags, pillow cases and tea towels with local fauna (mostly sea turtles) as a means of earning an income for their homes. Some of these women have husbands who are dependent on fishing at Shell Beach and they are some of the men that harvest sea turtle meat and eggs.
This initiative would assist them to earn an income for the home and indirectly have their husbands support the sea turtle conservation efforts at Shell Beach.
These products were on display at the Book Fair Exhibition at the Rupununi Room, Tower Hotel and are available via Iwokrama.
Hats and bags are sold for GY$1500, pillow cases for GY$3000 and tea towels for GY$400.
Please support this very important conservation initiative.
Yours faithfully,
Michelle Kalamadeen
