Dear Editor,
I had cause to use the sixth street in Cummings Lodge because of the diversion of the traffic for the Rio Summit. I must confess this particular street is in a deplorable condition. Most of the minibuses that ply the UG, Industry route use that street for access in and out. I am appalled at the neglect of this important road for such a lengthy time.
I am fully aware that the Mayor and City Council’s hands are filled presently with roadworks in the city. But why do they have to wait for this busy period to embark on so many projects all at the same time?
The Honourable Mr Kellawan Lall, I believe, resides in the third street of the very area. Are you aware sir of the deplorable condition of the sixth street in Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme? Residents of North Sophia Squatting Area have complained also about the access road in that area. I am privileged to use the road on a regular basis because I go to the dairy farm to purchase milk.
The three roads that I have identified need urgent attention because they are used daily by numerous individuals. I am fed up listening to excuses from the Mayor and City Council. I am of the view that residents in these areas are paying their rates and taxes promptly. I am disappointed to hear that prominent individuals have defaulted and owe the council millions. I am peeved to hear also that the councils are heavily indebted to GPL and so on. This is pure negligence and poor leadership.
Would it be fair for central government to release funds regularly to the Mayor and City Council when they have millions in outstanding rates to collect?
Finally, my sincere congratulations to the Gover-nment for completing the newly built Industry Crown Dam road. I had made representations through this newspaper about this said road.
I also met the President last year in Berbice when he was on the elections campaign and reminded him. He promised just after the elections.
This is kind and generous of the President. I trust the three issues I have raised would also be addressed speedily.
Yours faithfully,
Tajpaul Gainda
