East Coast Demerara and West Demerara beat track and field’s top district, Upper Demerara into third place on Sunday at the 2007 LINWEST Games held at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.
The East Coast District amassed 618 points to lead WD (556.33 points) and UD (517 points) respectively while East Bank Demerara finished fourth with 250.17 points.
East Coast Demerara topped the women’s events with a total of 355.5 points and was third in the men’s competition with 263 points.
West Demerara was second in the women’s tournament with 261.33 points and first in the men’s affair with 295 points. Upper Demerara came third in the women’s contest with 241 points and second in the men’s tourney with 276 points.
East Bank Demerara was fourth in both the women and men’s events with 125.16 points in the women and 125 points in the men’s competition.
Bygyval athlete, Monica Roberts won the under-20 girls’ 100, 200 and 400 metre races for East Coast to record a total of 33 points; Roberts was adjudged the champion female under-20 athlete.
Roberts out-sprinted Annette Cornelius and Dayleann Holder respectively in the 100m, while beating Olana Grant and Colica Phillips into second and third places respectively in the 200m race.
The Bygyval junior athlete completed the triple haul when she dominated Arnetia Saul and Grant respectively in the 400m. Roberts received three additional points for placing sixth in the under-20 girls’ Javelin.
Upper Demerara’s Joelyn Jones was awarded the champion male under-20 athlete after winning the under-20 boys’ discus throw, placing second in the javelin, shot put and fourth in the Long Jump event.
Jones defeated Delon Harris and Merwyn Austin respectively in the discus, while Orin Defreitas knocked Jones into second place in the Javelin with Cordis Paul finishing third. Austin turned the tables in the shot put with Horace Gurrick placing third.
Jones failed to spring his way into medal contention in the Long Jump event with David Young winning ahead of Ronald McIntyre and Ralph Fraser respectively.
Upper Demerara’s Tyshon Bentick and Natoya Grenville shared the honour of male and female under-17 champion athletes with 30 and 29 points respectively.
Bentick was impressive in the under-17 boys’ 1500m defeating Anthony Lyttle and Sanabia Duncan in that order. He also won the 800m ahead of Stevie Petrie and Clevon Gilkes and the 3000m in front of Donald Rodrigues and Linden Roberts.
Grenville won the 200 and 400m races and placed second in the 100m behind Wendy Miller and Toneka Charles. Charles placed second in the 200m while Lucia Fields was third. Charles was knocked into third place in the 400m with Leanna Fields placing second.
Upper Demerara’s Marlon Mosshette and Keyandrea Zephyr were the top male and female under-15 athletes with 34 and 32 points respectively.
Mosshette earned top honours in the boys’ 400 m and Long Jump events. Marlon Cox placed second in the 400m while Neil Redmond was third. Orwin Jones was second in the Long Jump with Jamal Johnson placing third.
Mosshette placed second in the boys’ 100m dash behind Chavez Ageday and Cox in the third position. Ageday also won the 200m while Isiah Saul placed second and Mosshette placed third.
Zephyr sprinted away with the 100 and 200m ahead of Cordella Halley and Sharain Boyce respectively in the 100m and Halley and Christine Bernard in that order in the 200m race.
Jenella Jonas won the 400m race ahead on Zephyr and Nadia Defreitas. Zephyr ended her campaign with a fifth place finish in the Long Jump event.
Sharain Boyce won the Long Jump girls’ under-15 with Tresure James and Defreitas in second and third respectively. A first place finish was worth 10 points while second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh were worth 8, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 points respectively.
