President of Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Affeeze Khan is appealing to the public for assistance to send boxers to the Pan American trials on April 21st- 29th in Trinidad.
“GABA is seeking the public’s support and is calling on organizations to sponsor boxers to go to Trinidad for Pan Am qualifying trials,” Khan told Stabroek Sport
Khan said the GABA had sent a letter to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCYS) for financial assistance for the participating boxers and was currently awaiting a response Khan. In addition, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has already indicated the desire to sponsor qualified boxers for the Pan Am Games which will be held in Brazil.
The GABA will be hosting a novice’s championships and Pan Am trials starting on Friday and concluding on Sunday at the Andrew `Six-Head’ Lewis Gym from 4:30pm.
Some 27 boxers have been selected to participate in the box-off which will determine who will represent Guyana in Trinidad.
A medical examination and a weigh-in will be conducted tomorrow at the Andrew `Six-Head’ Lewis Gym for those participating in tournament.
All referees are asked to be at Andrew Six Head Lewis Boxing Gym before 4:30 on Friday.
The tournament is being sponsored by Ansa Mcal CEO Paul Chan-A-Sue.
Meanwhile, an inter-School boxing tournament is billed for July which will attract a number of schools that are currently involved in a training programme conducted by coach Evan Parris.
CEO of A.H&L Kissoon Company M. Raj Kissoon yesterday donated 20 punching bags worth G$170,000 to the Association for distribution to schools in the training programme. Khan said that the purpose of the punching bags is to raise boxing awareness for boys and girls in the schools.
Students participating in the training programme will be taught to use the boxing gear properly whilst in the ring.
