Georgetown outplayed Upper Demerara to lift the Guyana Football Federation’s Guyflag Inter-Association Football title on Sunday evening at the GFC ground.
Playing a more aggressive game than their Linden counterparts, the city side virtually outplayed their arch rival in every department.
From as early as the fourth minute, national player Anthony `Awo’ Abrams sent the city team into the lead with a clinical shot that beat Upper Demerara’s custodian.
Twenty one minutes later, former national player Omali Nassy, increased the lead to give Georgetown a 2-0 half time lead.
Enjoying a comfortable lead going into the second session, the city’s ball weavers continued to dominate play at midfield which resulted in them further increasing the lead to 3-0 as Konata Mannings, after a nice build up from the middle, received the ball and placed it past Upper Demerara’s custodian in the 57th minute.
However, national striker Collie Hercules, who went into the game with 10 goals to his credit, added another one from a free kick at the North Road end of the field.
Georgetown’s Kevin McKenzie handled the ball just outside the 18-yard box and Hercules, who ended the tournament with the highest number of goals, had no problem finding his target in the 72nd minute.
Upper Demerara’s Nigel Price, who committed a serious foul in the 62nd minute, was issued the lone red card of the final.
In the third place play off, East Demerara edged Berbice 3-2 through a double from Yannick Smith in the 13th and 23rd minutes and a goal from Eon Dooker in the 55th minute. Delroy Fraser and Adrian Adams scored for Berbice in the 43rd and 44th minutes respectively.
Meanwhile, the organizers are still to announce the winners of the individual awards minus the highest goal scorer award, which clearly belongs to Hercules.
