The ‘Order of Liberation’ award will be bestowed on late President Dr Cheddi Jagan in recognition of “his contribution to the struggle for Guyanese Liberation, democracy and national development”, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
GINA said the posthumous award reflects Dr Jagan’s consistent struggle for Guyana’s independence and government is conferring it on him in acknowledgement of his selfless contributions to social, political and economic development. The “one-time award” will be given to former President Janet Jagan on Independence Day. GINA said Dr Jagan’s political vision also led to international recognition. In 2005 the South African government conferred the Oliver Tambo Award on Dr Jagan in acknowledgement of his leadership.
Also, at a recent memorial service to mark Dr Jagan’s tenth death anniversary, President Bharrat Jagdeo said his government recognises Dr Jagan’s immeasurable contributions through literature, the trade union and politics. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic leader was remembered for his “selflessness and tremendous personal sacrifice.”
