A number of persons, including play school and other students were treated to free medical check-ups when the West Berbice Mothers’ Union (WBMU) hosted a health outreach exercise in honour of its 51st anniversary.
Head of the WBMU, Joan James said the “health day” is one of five activities it has hosted for the year. Persons benefited from weight, blood sugar and blood pressure tests and talks on health and HIV and AIDS, which were conducted by a medex, a dentex, a nutritionist and Regional Health Officer Venus Smartt.
Smartt also advised parents about how to prepare healthy snacks for their children and warned them against “dumping junk foods like corn-curls in their lunch kits.” A mini exhibition, displaying fruit and fruit juices and healthy snacks for children was also used to demonstrate Smartt’s advice. The exercise was hosted at the old Fort Wellington School. James said last December the Mothers’ Union presented bed-linens and flowers to the Fort Wellington Hospital and has also planned a family day and “quiet day” for later this year.
