Less than a week after the Ministry of Agriculture launched an initiative to give impetus to the beekeeping industry as part of its agricultural diversification programme, bees invaded a primary school on the Essequibo Coast.
According to reports, around 10:00 hrs yesterday a swarm of bees invaded the Golden Fleece Primary School, attacking pupils and teachers and forcing them to flee the building.
It is understood that the bees have lived under the Golden Fleece koker for some time, unknown to anyone. Yesterday, they were somehow disturbed by a passing tractor and swarmed out, attacking their nearest prey – the occupants of the nearby primary school and passersby.
Although many of the pupils were attacked there was only one case that was severe, reports said, that of a ten-year-old girl who was stung in the head.
The police and the regional agricultural department were notified and were assisting to the best of their ability.
The regional agricultural department said that someone would be contracted to remove the bees as soon as possible.
