The English cricket team made hay while the sun shone yesterday as they engaged in a much-needed practice session at the Everest Cricket Club ground.
Under the watchful eye of head coach Duncan Fletcher, the bowlers, especially the faster ones, made full use of an almost dry run up to strut their stuff, while the batsmen were equal to the task, lofting mediocre deliveries over the practice nets and into the stands or across the boundary ropes.
The visitors were assisted in the bowling department by a number of local first division bowlers including Berbice’s pace bowler Jermey Gordon and Essequibo’s spinner Andrew Williams.
There was a sprinkling of local cricket enthusiasts who turned up to watch the English team practice under tight security and many are of the view that England will make light work of their Irish opponents come Friday, when they square off in the ICC, CWC 2007 Super Eight match at the newly-built Providence National Stadium.
Ireland sprung a surprise preliminary round victory over Pakistan in Jamaica, sending the Pakistanis back home.
