A Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara woman who claimed that bandits had robbed her of $700,000 in jewellery and US$1,200 last Friday is herself in custody as detectives probe the reported robbery.
According to reports, the woman had informed the Vreed-en-hoop police last Friday that two men had entered her home and robbed her of the jewellery and money. She had reportedly told them that she and her elderly grandfather were at home alone at the time and the men were armed. She reportedly said that the men had knocked on the door downstairs where her grandfather was and she had thought that her mother and father had returned home but after hearing noise as the men ransacked the area she went downstairs and was ordered back up by the bandits.
She reportedly told police that she had locked herself in a room upstairs while the men ransacked the two other rooms. However, later she reportedly changed the story and said that the men were unarmed. Noting the discrepancies, detectives investigated further and found that a family dispute could have been the reason for the report. She was taken into custody and grilled and yesterday reportedly confessed that the robbery had been set up.
A police source said that it is likely that she would be charged with aiding and abetting.
