Dear Editor,
I read with horror, the story of the family that was assaulted by 20 men outside the Sheriff Night Club and wish to voice my concern and, as a woman condemn this attack which saw the assault of innocent women who had merely gone out for some entertainment.
While it is not clear whether the goons were after money or just wanted revenge for a spilt drink, there is absolutely no excuse or good explanation for what happened. Even if the family had aggravated those who assaulted them, this response was way overboard to say the least.
I wonder how they would feel if this treatment was meted out to their sisters, mothers or other womenfolk. But then I wonder if they care because their mentality reeks of hatred and ‘ignorance.’
The fact that no one went to the family’s assistance speaks volumes of what Guyana has become, the level to which my country has sunk.
It is so common now to hear of the strong taking advantage of the weak while chaos reigns. I hope people speak out against this vile act and condemn it in the strongest possible terms.
No wonder so many people are leaving Guyana with no intention of returning. I once chose to return to Guyana and lived in fear for a long time before I opted to leave again.
I have since left and now find it hard to defend Guyana. The shame I feel when people comment on what is happening in Guyana is tremendous. One thing is certain though, I am happy not to be there. Unfortunately, I still have many relatives there and I have to hope for the best for them.
Imagine being stripped and humiliated because of a spilt drink. And imagine there are those in certain sectors of Guyanese society who would prefer for such incidents not to be published so as to protect the country’s reputation.
Yours faithfully,
R Henry
