The bandit who was captured after he and an accomplice robbed an employee of Harris Easy Cash Pawn Shop around 8.20 am on Wednesday is likely to appear at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court today.
The two bandits, one armed with a handgun, pounced on the employee, Robin Mohabir and relieved him of a bag containing $20,000. But Mohabir gave chase and with the help of a police officer and public-spirited citizens captured one of the bandits on Angoy’s Avenue and recovered the cash.
Mohabir told Stabroek News that he was walking towards the pawn shop in New Street along with a female companion when the men rode up to them from behind. One of the men placed a gun to his head and demanded that he “drop the bag.”
He said he complied and the unarmed bandit picked up the bag and rode off in the direction of the Main Road, while the other bandit escaped towards the “waterside.” Mohabir said he immediately ran after the bandit with the bag, alerting the police officer who was on his way to work, in the process.
He said he was very pleased with the response of the police officer and the residents of Angoy’s Avenue who came out and helped to corner the bandit. But he hopes that the bandit with the gun would be captured as well.
