Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy yesterday appealed for more persons to donate blood so as to maintain an adequate supply at the blood bank, which only has 50% of its target, a release from the Government Infor-mation Agency (GINA) said.
According to the release, Ramsammy said 50% is insufficient for emergencies and urged persons who had indicated their willingness to donate blood to do so.
In November last year the government introduced a blood donation initiative to attain a 100% blood target by the year 2010 and the initiative sought to facilitate adequate safe blood and increase voluntary donor base, the release said.
The government has been working with the Pan American Health Organi-sation/World Health Orga-nisation (PAHO/WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), USAID and the European Union (EU) to develop an effective service in Guyana, it added.
