In the Sunday Stabroek, letter writer Aubrey Alexander lamented the state of traffic on Guyana’s road and urged traffic authorities to pursue a zero tolerance policy.
Mr. Alexander feels that the police have dropped the baton in bringing to book errant users of the roads. Pointing to cycles without lights and horse drawn carts without lanterns at night, he argued that the authorities were not promoting or contributing to a disciplined society. And indiscipline is the problem.
Alexander recalls the stamp of authority which Fred Peterkin, Traffic Chief decades ago, brought to the road traffic scene and the professionalism and no-nonsense approach to his work.
His letter ends with a request to the current Traffic Chief (acting).
The simple fact is that discipline has disappeared from Fred Peterkin’s time to now. Fred would never be seen in public wearing those summer suits (where the shirt matches the three quarter pants) and a cap turned backward with the tag still in place.
