Dear Editor,
Tucked away on page 3 of Stabroek News dated March 16, 2007 was the news item “T&T drops VAT on food”, Trinidad being the wealthiest country in the Caribbean.
I have since been looking eagerly for an avalanche of letters from concerned citizens and organizations to challenge our government to do the same.
We are one of the poorest countries in the region and to add to our woes even the food that we eat is now in so many instances subject to VAT.
Will the party in power see the necessity and wisdom of following Trinidad? It will not only relieve suffering but gain them good marks to boot.
Mr Editor while they are about removing VAT from food maybe they can consider the 16% charge on telephone calls. After all, a telephone is no longer a luxury it is an absolute necessity and by the sheer volume of calls the original 10% would garner more than enough revenue and relieve many businesses of this exorbitant 16%.
Yours faithfully,
Randolph Joseph Eleazar
