Dear Editor,
Cricket is here and the woes of the Guyanese people are here too. First, we have the water woes. For the last couple of days water has not run more than a trickle. I do hope the visitors see that we are indeed a land of many less waters.
Second, we have the ticket price woes. The ICC failed to acknowledge that Guyanese who are cricket loving fans will indeed find it difficult to purchase tickets to attend the games because of the high and out of reach prices. This was evident by the poor turnout at the South Africa and Sri Lanka game. A more suitable price would have surely seen the stadium filled to capacity. I guess it’s all about money.
Third, the fans who ventured to the stadium are accustomed to walking with their food and drink but were heavily restricted as to what they could have taken with them. The local organizing committees of the West Indian countries basically took what the ICC said as gospel and apparently did not object to some of these terms and conditions. Shame on them for taking away the basic rights of the West Indian supporters.
Finally we have the chairman of the LOC who seems to want to pull wool over the eyes of the people by failing to acknowledge that the Guyana stadium was indeed not completed and that cricket being held here was in doubt. There was no negativity in the media wanting to let the public know that.
All in all, let’s try to enjoy the games with whatever little comfort we have.
Yours faithfully,
K Persaud
