Dear Editor,
I did not mean to spank you in my last letter; however I thank you for the more balanced reporting of the recent fire in Georgetown that occurred on Friday March 23, 2007 at Sir Chandra’s home.
I reviewed the story, as I do, when fires are reported in the local media for biased attacks on the brave members of the Guyana Fire Service.
Being a former member of that department of which I am proud since it has afforded me bigger things in my current career, I must say that I will defend the department when they perform miracles.
The Fire Service did their best on this outing with limited resources. While the reporter stated that the first fire tender to arrive did not have much water and did little to contain the fire he failed to state that this was only a Land Rover fire tender and the fire service was only called when the fire was observed by an alert security guard at Demtoco.
Maybe if an alarm was raised when the fire was in its incipient stages, and the fire department was called immediately that very Land Rover with a water tank of 200 gallons may have extinguished that fire, since it is stationed at the Alberttown Fire Station less than 2 miles from the address of this fire.
I must compliment all involved in the staging of the World Cup cricket in Guyana, I enjoyed the game today seated in my recliner with my television and seeing my beloved country on stage for the world to see.
The police officers were smartly dressed and Guyana surely shone today.
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Marques
