The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) says it is alarmed at the increasing number of school-age children being found at the Mandela landfill.
In a press release, the council said waste is processed and disposed of at this site and because of the nature of such activities it is a prohibited area for children. Because of the harmful and disease-carrying materials dumped at the site, children who roam the area are being exposed to a host of diseases.
As a result, the council said it considered the need for a welfare officer to visit the children’s homes to inform their parents of these dangers and was therefore working with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
The M&CC also called on parents to ensure that school-age children attend school.
