Magistrate Chandra Sohan placed 15 persons on $15,000 bail each when they appeared before him at the New Amsterdam Court on Friday, charged with fraudulent diversion of electricity.
The court heard that on September 28 the Guyana Power & Light Company made a sweep in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam and found that the persons were obtaining electricity illegally. They pleaded not guilty to the charge and are to return to court on October 15. Bail was posted for 11 defendants, while four persons, including a young mother, Samantha Dindyial along with her one-month-old baby were led away to prison in tears.
According to reports, Dindyial would have to remain imprisoned with the infant as her husband who was facing a similar charge was out on bail and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
