Guyana’s `Deadly’ Denny Dalton is the new World Boxing Emporium (WBE) welterweight champion of the world.
Dalton gained the title of world champion after knocking out Trinidad and Tobago’s Kevin Placide in the 10th round of their 12-round welterweight contest on Sunday night at Skinner Park, San Fernando to wrest the WBE title from Placide’s grasp, the Trinidad Express reported.
“A few weeks after boasting he was the best and promising to knock out his Guyanese opponent, Placide lay on his back, knocked out at Skinner Park,” the Express stated.
Dalton delivered the coup de grace in two minutes, 48 seconds of the 10th round when he delivered a crushing right hook which sent the 31-year-old Trinidadian to the canvas. Placide had been on the deck at least six times earlier but none of the trips had counted as official knock-downs.
“This is the second time we beat him.If he comes a next time we will kill him,” the newspaper quoted a member of Dalton’s camp as saying.
The win improves Dalton’s record to 23 fights 16 wins and six losses. Eleven of Dalton’s wins have come by knockout.
Placide, a policeman in his native Trinidad and Tobago was faster and far more accurate than Dalton in the early rounds, but the momentum swung Dalton’s way in the latter half of the fight when Placide appeared to run out of steam, the newspaper reported.
It was then that Dalton proved deadly.
Earlier, United States of America female pugilist Dakota Stone accused Trinidad’s JIzelle Salandy of having chicken fever after the Trinidadian pulled out of their world title bout at the last moment.
“The only medical problem she has is fear. She has chicken fever,” Dakota Stone announced.
Just as the fight was scheduled to begin, and with Stone already in the ring and warmed up promoter Boxu Potts made an abrupt announcement, stating that the fight was off because Salandy was found to be medically unfit.
When interviewed, Potts said that two doctors had examined Salandy, and after taking into consideration their reports, he was not willing to make her fight. He added that members of the public who had paid for tickets would be refunded, and offered to keep Stone and her entourage in T&T for another week so that the fight could come off. The American was having none of that.
“Hell no,” she said. “Boxu does not treat people right. We came over here to fight, trying to get paid. She could come now. We are ready to go. I am ready to fight. She is scared of me.”
Stone added that this was the fourth time her fight with Salandy had been cancelled. When interviewed, Salandy said she wanted to fight but was taking the advice of the doctors.
“I am feeling good,” she said. “I am willing to fight. Dakota can say anything. I am willing to fight her now but the doctors said no,” the Trinidad Express reported her as saying.
