A teenaged maid who allegedly stabbed her employer in the abdomen with a knife after an argument over a dirty plate was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
Melisa Peters, 19, of 468 A Field, South Sophia pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on September 25 at Georgetown, she unlawfully and maliciously wounded Onicia Welcome with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.
Attorney-at-law Frank Fraser appeared for Peters. He told the court that his client was working as a domestic for the virtual complainant. He stated that there was an altercation between the two while his client was cutting tomatoes. The attorney accused Welcome of being the aggressor and stated that his client accidentally injured her. He requested reasonable bail.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews stated that the offence was a serious one and the injuries Welcome suffered were to her abdomen which nearly resulted in her death. He added that Welcome had gone to seek medical attention yesterday and could not be in court. The prosecutor told the court that the two had an argument over a plate that was left dirty and Peters took the knife and stabbed Welcome. He added that it was no accident.
Fraser responded that Welcome is recovering from her injuries and is out of danger.
Welcome’s mother-in-law who appeared in court on her behalf stated that after the incident Peters refused to assist her in taking Welcome to the hospital. Additionally, she said that Peters also kept attacking Welcome even as she lay on the floor.
The magistrate refused bail and transferred the case to Court Six for October 12.
