Dear Editor,
The Guyana Labour Union (GLU) is scheduled to hold its Conference on October 21-23. Workers and members of this union are yet to hear of the result of an audit into a possible $ 2.9 million dollars fraud.
Mr. Carvil Duncan, General Secretary, did say that there was no fraud. Mr. Robert Corbin, President General, did admit that the auditors were in the union and he deferred comment until after the findings. The findings need to be made known before the conference. .
The General Secretary and President General enjoy super salaries and handsome allowances. Mr. Corbin has apparently turned a blind eye and finds no problem supporting Mr. Duncan’s behaviour with his silence. There is no other conclusion one can come to.
Recently Mr. Duncan dismissed Mr. Elton Reynolds. There was no known wrong doing. Members feel that Mr. Duncan did not have the authority but cannot have access to Mr. Corbin to share their feelings and get assurances.
In the words of the late Mr. Hoyte, then President General of the GLU, there should be a forensic audit. This audit must be conducted before the Conference, or the Conference should be postponed to allow it.
Yours faithfully,
Thomas Abraham
