Miss Commonwealth 2007 finalist Shirley Burnett and Guyana UK have teamed up to raise some much needed funds for the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for Children in London, England.
Shirley who was born in London to Guyanese parents is one of 53 finalists competing for the title of Miss Commonwealth International, which will be held in November. The pageant is a voluntary event where the competitors raise money for different charitable causes.
Having already won the Miss Bridal Hair and Beauty title Shirley, has turned her focus to raising money for GOSH, which specializes in the treatment of sick children and is the largest centre for research into childhood illnesses outside the US.
Guyana UK is a London-based organization, which has been set up to promote Guyanese culture to the masses. Eon Pyle, founder of Guyana UK said the organisation was happy to assist. “She [Shirley] asked us if we could help to promote any function to raise funds so we offered to use our club night and give her money from the proceeds towards the charity,” he said.
The club night was dubbed a success and was fairly well attended. A variety of creole dishes were on sale.
Shirley, who has a degree in politics, said she hopes to put her training to good use and bring communities together so as to ensure that people from all walks of life have a positive voice within the political arena.
The Miss Commonwealth International is scheduled to be held in London on the November 17 and many Guyanese in England and abroad will be cheering Shirley Burnett on. (Paula Frank)
