In the wake of the recent ambush of an MMC vehicle when two guards were shot dead, the company has announced that they will no longer be collecting money at the ferry crossing or for the road toll service at their interior locations.
According to a company official this move is to ensure their employees’ safety.
On Monday last Rodwell Clarke and Warren Hutson were killed and two others, Dalton Walcott and Glenmore Reeves were injured after eight gunmen attacked their vehicle when they were escorting cash from an interior location.
An MMC official told Stabroek News that the new system will come into effect from October 10. The official said money will no longer be collected at the company’s interior location toll stations, which include the Mango Landing Station, the Teperu Station, the Sherima Station, the Kurupukari Station and the Itaballi Toll Station.
Instead of paying at these stations as previously, persons will have to make all payments at the company’s Head Office at Happy Acres on the East Coast of Demerara. The official said the new system will allow for persons to purchase several passes at one time. According to the source this new system has been finalized after securing approval from the Ministry of Public Works.
This new arrangement would now reduce the exposure of their staff to attacks since it is clear that the motive for Monday’s deadly ambush was robbery. “We are trying to move away from having money at these interior locations where there is little or no proper police presence
