Dear Editor,
I recently noticed a promotion for the music festival organized by GT Entertainment which will include Buju Banton as one of several entertainers, though I use this term lightly. I find this shocking and I am deeply hurt that entertainment promoters in Guyana continue to ignore the cry by both locals and foreigners to put an end to homophobic artistes and their message of intolerance. We live in an age of enough strife and stigma and do not need to further promote hate and discrimination against others.
In several countries around the world persons such as Buju Banton are banned because of the messages they promote but here in Guyana we still seem to encourage this behaviour. Maybe it is because of this attitude to homophobia and general discrimination that we are a society on the rise where it comes to hate crimes and HIV related discrimination. When will we put a stop to this intolerance and start to accept everyone as equal human beings and thus make a move to tackle greater things that affect our society and the world on the whole.
Yours faithfully,
