President’s College has been without a stable water supply for two months because of a well failure and nothing was done to rectify this gruelling situation, although the Ministry of Education was fully aware of the dilemma. Day after day we the students have to fetch water for all purposes, whether for drinking, washing bathing, etc. This water which is provided isn’t even suitable for flushing a toilet and closely resembles the colour of ginger beer; also it is not always readily available.
Upon being interviewed by media personnel, Mr Derrick Jodhan, who is President’s College Administrative Manager, had the audacity to claim that the water provided was potable and that students were complaining only because they have to fetch the water upstairs for usage. This is clearly an act of disregard to the students by Mr Jodhan, who instead of trying to conceal ‘dirty laundry’ should have spoken the truth.
The male dormitory was supposed to be completed about two years ago but this is not the case, forcing male fifth and sixth form students to reside at the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI), in Cove and John. Having these students housed there is not only a hassle on the students but it also poses threats financially since monies are spent to transport the students to and from the institution every day.
Is this the treatment we deserve? One wonders if this is another act of government in retaliation because we refused to allow them to bring politics into our school when they wanted to replace the late Forbes Burnham’s portrait with one of Dr Cheddi Jagan.
One wonders if the water situation and the other many problems of President’s College would exist if a minister’s child was a live-in student at President’s College. Is this the manner in which you treat youth who are indeed the future of tomorrow?
