Dear Editor,
I thought Ms. Naicelis Williams’ letter captioned “Women are regularly subjected to vulgar remarks and obscene suggestions” (07.10.07)was fairly straightforward and understood it to be about the negative effects men’s sexual comments have on the women in our country. Ms. Sharmillah (Penny) Narine’s response “I don’t mind cat calls from men” (07.10.09) to that original letter on the other hand made me think a bit more about the whole picture portrayed. On second reading of Ms. Williams’ letter, I still would like to stick to my original understanding of it: The negative effects.
It annoyed me greatly that Ms. Narine thought it best to stop being too thin-skinned and ‘get tough’ against all these sexual comments from men. Such comments are louded by males who want to see such attitudes continue so that they can continue to degrade women and to take advantage of young and underage girls. Am I to understand that Ms. Narine does not mind being called bitch, whore, ‘C**t’ and other such vulgar words? Do women in general find such words appealing and do they make women ‘feel good’ about themselves?
Okay, so the men are the aggressive sex and they have it in their DNA to pursue females and that’s just fine – we can’t change that and yes most women love men’s attention especially when it’s complimentary or flirtatious even. One cannot live without the other, no doubt about that. However there are many positive and healthy ways of showing one’s interest towards the other sex.
Walking down a busy street in GT, one sees and hears all those doing the cat calls
