Dear Editor,
I have made several complaints to the Local Sanitary Inspector, the Mayor and Town Clerk of the Anna Regina Town Council and the Environmental Protection Agency about an illegal cement bond at Lot 42, Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast in a residential area.
Mayor Mr Sammy Rampersaud and Town Clerk Ganga Persaud have instructed the Sanitary Inspector to visit this illegal cement bond and send a report to the E.P.A. on its findings so a cease order can be issued to the owner of this business. According to the Town Clerk this officer bluntly refuses to visit the establishment.
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued three (3) letters to the owner since my first complaints informing him of the validity of my complaints of the dust emitting from his establishment and recommending that he ceases operation in the residential area. All the agencies in letters and telephone conversations had asked the Anna Regina Town Council to help them ascertain the legality of this cement bond because it was constructed in the Anna Regina Township without prior approval of the other agencies.
The off-loading and loading of cement in an open area is a health hazard. Although several visits were conducted and letters were issued to the owner of this establishment to cease his operation this practice still continues on a daily basis. The Mayor and his Town Clerk in my opinion as the former Deputy Mayor of that township are competent and professional in their duties but some officers like the Local Sanitary Officer are questionable in their performances and should be transferred out of the region.
However I wish to thank Dr Samdeo Persaud Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health in coming to my assistance with the health aspect so I can now get some relief.
Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan.
Former Deputy Mayor
