The Guyana Relief Council (GRC) says it is grateful to those persons whose generosity allowed it to respond promptly to the needs of the fire victims at Laing Avenue and it encourages the public to continue to assist.
In a press release the Council said its personnel worked tirelessly to provide emergency items for the families and they were assisted by groups and persons including the New Thriving Restaurant which provided dinner for the victims on Thursday. The GRC provided lunch for the families on Friday. Also, Shelter Administrator Donald Mentis, Welfare Co-ordinator Rohini Bonar and Adminis-trative Officer Lynette Carter visited the scene within hours of the fire and Mrs Yvonne Hinds visited the victims of another fire, in the same street, which occurred later the same day.
The Council is making an urgent appeal for items for an expectant mother of twins who also has a two-year-old. The woman is in her last trimester and the Council requests donations suited to her condition. This family and one other are being housed at the GRC’s facility.
Meanwhile, the Council said it is grateful to the Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund which donated $25,000, Hadco Farm, $300,000, Gilbert Gomes, $2,000, Brandon Garner, $5,000 and an anonymous donor who contributed $35,000. It also received clothing and miscellaneous items from George Barker, Dion Banwarie, Felicia Hytmiah, Vesta Squires, Karen Lee Ishmael and Claire Gillis.
The GRC said by 5 pm last Thursday it had prepared food hampers, clothing, mattresses and bedding and hot meals for the victims. Those who benefited include 82-year-old Alicia Browne from a family of one, Patricia Languine from a family of five, Carl Peters from a family of four, Yolanda Griffith from a family of three, Mallisa Griffith from a family of three, Claymont Griffith from a family of six, Nicola Kitt from a family of two, Knight Belle from a family of six, Carlotta Fredricks from a family of four, Clarissa Anderson from a family of four, George Burke from a family of three and Angelia Union from a family of three.
The GRC said individuals and organisations who wish to contribute can call telephone numbers 225-3081 or 225-2874 or fax number 225-3681.
Donors are also invited to visit the GRC’s Lot X Riverview Ruimveldt office. The GRC reminds donors that all items donated must be in a condition “no less than could be used by one’s self.”
